What is the SAT Essay Tutoring Program?
What is the SAT Essay Tutoring Program?
Are you concerned that you might not be ready for the essay writing section of the SAT?

IvyTown.com has developed a private tutoring system designed specifically to help you prepare for the essay writing sections of the SAT and the SAT II Writing Subject Test. Our skilled, Harvard-educated tutors know exactly how the scorers will be grading the essays, so they are well equipped to help you receive a perfect score.

The essays you will write for these tests are very different from the essays you write for school. Taking that into account, our tutors will teach you how to write strong essays quickly, and work with you to strengthen the areas in which you are weak.

How does this program work?
In WritingCare, you finish two complete writing assignments every four weeks as follows:
  • The first week, you will turn in a first draft; then your tutor will write an intensive, detailed critique designed to help you with the problems you are having.
  • For the second week, you rewrite the assignment according to your tutor's critique. The tutor will then read your revised draft and send you any extra suggestions he or she might have.
  • Especially at the end of the second critique, your tutor will write a final draft for you, smoothing out your second draft, using better vocabulary, and enhancing overall style.
  • The third week, you will turn in a first draft of the next assignment, and so on. (Click here for more details.)

  • Your tutor is one of the brightest minds in the country, having been educated at Harvard University.

  • Other tutoring services offer you a two-step system that merely shows you the mistakes in your writing - but you may not actually be learning from just reading those comments.

  • In the four-step system of IvyTown.com, however, your tutor writes a detailed critique on the first draft of your assignment. Then you write a second draft based on your tutor's critique, enabling you to make concrete, substantial improvements in your writing. Your tutor will then write another shorter critique on your second draft, a final edit for your future reference. This will allow you to see what you've mastered, and what you can continue to improve in later essays.

  • Your tutor also writes a final draft of your essay for you so that you can learn how further you could improve your essay. Your tutor’s final draft will serve as the ultimate guide for your future essay writing.

  • Our tutoring is based on the scoring guidelines of the College Board and on our own secret strategies for getting a perfect score.

About the SAT's Writing Section
About the SAT's Writing Section
The College Board, in order to more accurately test the capabilities of high school students, introduced a SAT test. Starting in the year 2005, students complete a math section, a reading section, and a new writing section that includes a written essay. The addition of this third section radically changes the way students will study and prepare for the SAT.

Whereas you can do reasonably well on the current math and verbal sections by learning some handy gimmicks from SAT workbooks or test-prep courses, the new writing section will require you to be a truly competent writer - one who can write a good essay in 25 minutes. In other words, you can't fake good writing - only through repeated practice can you improve your writing skills. A student can't "cram" for a written essay; if his or her writing skills haven't been carefully developed over time, the new SAT will reveal this weakness in a way that the old test couldn't.

The truth is, colleges and universities are beginning to look at writing ability as an indicator of intelligence and merit. *They are demanding that students prove themselves through writing, and the New SAT written essay section is indicative of that demand. University of California president Richard C. Atkinson praised the plan for an added written essay section in the SAT, saying, "The best predictor of performance is the writing exam, so on a national basis we think it will be tremendously important."
