At IvyTown.com, we believe that you can achieve truly good writing skills through a solid understanding of every part of the writing process -- organization, sentence structure, word choice, evidence and support, creativity, and more. But it would be completely overwhelming for you to focus on every aspect of writing in every assignment! That's why our tutors emphasize a few key areas of improvement each week. Perhaps this week you'll work on the organizational foundation of your essay; once you master that, the next critique will help you diversify sentence structure, and so on. Each critique, however, will include a grammar, usage, and spelling component, since those need to be perfected as soon as possible.

In our samples, you can see how effectively the student can learn writing skills from her tutor. The student submits a first draft, written on her own; then, after receiving her tutor's detailed critique, she writes a second draft and turns it in. Then her tutor gives her a shorter critique of the second draft, with suggestions for future improvement.

In this example, it's clear that many problems in the first draft could be solved if the student had organized his or her work better. Accordingly, the first critique focuses mostly on the need for a stronger introduction and thesis statement. Once the student improves in those areas, other weak spots can be tackled in future writing assignments. The second critique polishes and fine-tunes the second draft. And because you have access to all of your past assignments and critiques, you can always go back and refresh your memory on what your tutor has already taught you, should you have the same problems again. Your improvement will be steady and, more importantly, manageable.

As shown in the inset below, a student can view her essay and the tutor’s critique on the same page in the password-protected member site. The student's essay is line-numbered automatically by our computer system when she submits her essay to her tutor at the IvyTown.com website.
